Ilkka Kukkonen

Hi, my name is Ilkka Kukkonen.

My relationship with technology is versatile, as educational developer I use it to widen the participation and support the learning outcomes. I follow various emerging technologies and developments and quite often I find myself operating as consultant and mentor for knowledge management processes.  Commonly I implement technology to support my activities as a hobby and use it for share my views and support the message in the community and social media.

Pedagogic studies in the late 90s focused my technological enthusiasm towards pedagogical applications of technology. Pretty soon I got interested in pedagogy of distance learning and it was in 1996 when I designed my first solution for distance learning, a web-based VLE called "District". It was designed for problem based learning in teacher education.

Couple of years after that I discovered the benefits of networked video and started to develop streaming video solution for educational purposes. We needed a solution to record and distribute lectures between our university’s campuses and use them as well in supplemental education. The concept (Tilavirta/Simultaneus Space, 2003) provided completely new way of integrated streaming and conferencing and as early form of automated lecture capture. It enabled us to gain insights how lecture capture can widen the forms of participation.

Quite early we noticed that lecture capture challenges educational organization in many ways, same time bringing up important themes for discussion. We used the system for years and it was scaled over tens of installations and later used also to support reflection in teacher training. The concept demonstrated us that space affects directly on quality of distance learning through interaction. Thus, I started to focus on space design that would underpin and encourage interaction between the learners and teachers.

Even thought we have a quite long history of utilizing lecture capture for supporting student retention and providing flexibility for participation, we still have quite limited view on how students are using the videos to support their studies in modern learning environments. Widespread adoption of lecture capture still lacks success stories and pedagogically sound approaches. Previous experiences and our need to improve our pedagogical implementations of lecture capture led us to design a research framework for clarifying student and teacher perceptions. Supported by findings from our ongoing research, I’ll be sharing our first experiences and views for development in my presentation at Online Educa Berlin.

Currently I work as Development Manager at Aducate, Centre for Training and Development in University of Eastern Finland where I operate with various development projects in education, ICT and tourism domain. I am also active on my Ph.D.  studies in education and in that role I seek novel approaches for educational uses of online video and analytics. When not active on development projects, I like to ride twisty roads with motorcycle and conquer the mountains with snowmobile at winter.

See you at Berlin!
