All my working life I’ve been employed in education First as a teacher, and later on as educational tester and developer of examinations and testing. After a period of five years of software consultancy I worked as educational manager at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences. Since 2008 I work as lecturer at HAN University of Applied Sciences.
The look at education from a tester’s perspective is special, you’re focusing on results and not specifically on the learning process. Though the learning process is the thing that really had my attention and my interest! So after a short detour in which my study in expert systems lead to an employment as consultant in software for quality enhancement of names and addresses in databases, I came back to education in 2000.
This time my interest in the learning process and in teaching combined with my preference for computer systems and software made me choose the higher education in Computing as my working area. These areas of interest did even more converge into a teaching job where teaching not only takes place in real confrontations with students but also in virtual confrontations in a virtual learning room.
In the Netherlands the impact of virtual learning and lecturing is increasing, the University of applied science in Arnhem, together with the Open University, Universities of applied science in Groningen, Eindhoven and The Hague/Zoetermeer are developing expertise in teaching an official blended-learning Bachelor programme for ICT professionals who combine work and study.
My contributions to this innovative programme consists of developing the first semester course on Information Systems, coordinating the teaching staff involved, and delivering the face to face and virtual classrooms of the IS-course at HAN.
The first pilot studies and online sessions have been conducted and lead to interesting and surprising reactions from students. We follow the course of events closely to learn on effectiveness and effeciciency of learning processes and student and staff satisfaction!
