Kari Lehtonen is currently a senior lecturer and a specialist in learning technology in Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. In addition to teaching mathematics, his main tasks involve administering and coordinating online studies in the faculty of computer science and industrial management. The mathematics courses given by him are good examples of blended learning, where the Moodle learning environment, the WebALT automatic online assessment and test system, project-based learning, and traditional class work are integrated in an exiting way. Kari Lehtonen has a long experience in developing engineering education. He has planned and administered the online studies in the the joint international civil engineering master program ConRem run by Metropolia University and Fachhochshule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin. He has been involved as a consultant in the WebALT project (later WebALT Inc.), which is part of the eContent EU programme. Its aim was to produce mathematical online content, especially web-based assessment, practicing, and testing solutions. The WebALT services are now used in several Finnish schools and polytechnics. Kari Lehtonen has given presentations on learning technology in several international conferences, e.g. in ONLINE EDUCA, SEFI-IGIP, MATHEON, and JEM Thematic Network conferences.
