Self-Directed Learning at Work

For too long, the focus of L&D has been on how to create and distribute structured learning content, with an emphasis on moving employees down a learning path, whether they like it or not. There is a different way. This session explores to encourage people to learn in their own way, driven by their own internal motivation. We'll look at how it's possible for individuals to follow a certification programme through situated learning, and equally how performance support tools can move people from passive to active learners.

An Example of Situated Self-directed Learning: UNSSC's E-Management Certificate Programme
Dr. Ugo Caruso currently serves as Learning Portfolio Manager for the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) Knowledge Centre for Leadership and Management (KCLM). At UNSSC KCLM he's responsible for the development of the management-related training interventions for UN staff. He is also responsible for the development of the new UNSSC's E-Management Certificate Programme. Before joining KCLM, Ugo led the Digital Learning Unit of UNSSC’s Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development in Bonn, Germany (2015-2018). Ugo has more than 10 years of experience in coordinating, designing and developing digital learning solutions for UN Staff and partner agencies. Ugo holds a Ph.D. in Public International Law from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt am Main.

Dr. Eran Gal is an e-learning expert with over 20 years of experience in applying cross-company technology-based learning solutions. Dr. Gal holds both M.A. and PhD degrees from the Knowledge Technology Lab at the Tel Aviv University, School of Education. Following several years as an e-Learning manager in large enterprises Dr. Gal joined the Holon Institution of Technology (HIT), Faculty of Instructional Technologies as a lecturer and a research team leader. Dr. Gal delivers courses and seminars regarding instructional design and e-learning offering development.

In her current role, she is responsible for strategic definition of learning experiences working with clients and other learning teams across Accenture’s various business entities globally. Mirjam is a proud advocate for a learner-centric approach, using design thinking techniques, and a (scientific) evidence-informed approaches to learning design and has a collaborative blog with Paul A. Kirschner on https://3starlearningexperiences.wordpress.com/. Together, they recently completed a book on evidence-informed learning experience design (publication date: 3 Feb 2020). She presents about her work regularly.
She has completed an MSc in Learning Sciences, an MA in Psycholinguistics and a BA in Speech Therapy.
